The Sick Room

We’ve a sick ferret this morning: Jack Jack started throwing up just after pogle left for work. After a brief isolation period in the bathtub while he got it all out of his system, I’ve dosed him up on some pepcid ac (to help with the throat scarring) and ferret lax (to help with the flushing). He’ll be staying in the playpen today with lots of water and soup available. Here’s hoping my boy recovers. 🙁

Edit 11:15 AM – He hasn’t thrown up again and has drank some water, so that’s good. Postponing my allergy shot so I can keep an eye on him a little longer and maybe get some more water into him.

  1. JJ is doing better now. He was eating and drinking on his own accord last night, and I’m at home today and will continue to keep an eye on him.

  2. I *wish* my little guys would throw up sometimes! Every now and again they get hacky/wheezy and I think “oh if you could just get it OUT!”

Glad to hear Jack Jack’s doing better. No fun being isolated from all of your pals. 😉

    1. We’ve been keeping him in a separate playpen with Zoe lately, just to continue to monitor him and make sure he’s eating. Can’t really monitor consumption with more than 2 ferrets eating from a bowl, especially with how much of a little pig Minsc can be. I swear he eats his body weight every other day.

We’ve only had vomiting issues in a serious way once before, and it was when Minion had an intestinal blockage. We almost lost him before we got him to an emergency-service ferret vet who ran an IV to keep him hydrated, so we’re very much anti-vomiting when it comes to ferrets, just because of the stress and worry from that incident. Minion has scars in his throat from it too, which makes him a bit more raspy on a more constant basis, and he sometimes has difficulty swallowing dry kibble.

Had JJ continued to vomit past the one incident we’dve had him in to the vet for sure, although we were pretty confident he didn’t have a blockage (we improved playroom safety after the original incident, primarily by getting rid of the couch Minion tried to eat).
