Now you know (and knowing is half the battle!)

We really should have checked out this page before we got the ferrets…it’s all true! Some of my favorites:

Bottlebrush: An excited or angry ferret will “poof” all the tail hair so it looks like a bottlebrush. (Michele: They look like squirrels when this happens.)

Bulldog: A term used to describe the body style of ferret that is a heavily-built, with short, thick legs and neck, a blunt, broad face, wide chest, and a rolling sort of gait. (Michele: The plumpies! Although I hear Ares isn’t a plumpy anymore! D:)

Butt Wipe: When ferrets finish going to the bathroom, they will drag their rear end on the floor as a substitute for toilet paper.  (Michele: Which is why I keep pieces of cardboard down just outside of the litter bins/potty pads…ew.)

Chomp: A meeting of ferret teeth and human skin, most often an invitation to play. Often preceded by licking, as in lick-lick-chomp. Correct this behavior by scruffing. (Michele: Minion is famous for his lick-lick-chomp, and pogle is his favorite victim. Yay for me. Also, Minion sulks when you scruff him…then pretends it never happened and goes right back to what he was doing — torturing pogle. I think it’s the high-pitch squeals…)

Corner: Litterbox, from a ferret’s point of view, regardless of what is actually in the corner. (Michele: We had a weight scale in a corner once…yeah, you can predict what happened. Thanks, Jack Jack.)

Gravity: A word that is not in your ferret’s vocabulary. (Michele: Ferrets also have no sense of self-preservation/fear. Not the greatest combination…)

Hug and Scoot: A way for ferrets to transport (or play with) objects (typically round). The ferret grabs the object with front paws, hugs it, pushes it down under the belly, and then scoots backwards. (Michele: Yes, it’s as hilarious as it sounds. I’ll try to get a video of it up soon.)

Portal Ambush: When a business of ferrets gather around the base of a door that a human wishes to open and race through as soon as the opportunity arises. This forces the human to employ ferret juggling skills. (Michele: Every freaking night…It’s like they think all doors lead to Narnia.)

Speedbump: When a ferret suddenly lies prostate on the floor (usually accompanied by a deep sigh). This may occur in the middle of playing, which will usually resume after a short session of speedbumping. (Michele: We call this emo-ing, or carpet sharking because Minion will inch along like this for a yard or so…)
